In short: This advent calendar budget planner turns one total into a per-day gift amount for a 24-door calendar. The calculator returns the number; this guide says where it comes from, which constants it rests on, and where the math stops being valid.

A calendar is 24 small purchases pretending to be one big one. A per-day figure is what keeps the 24 purchases inside the one total.

What it computes

The planner returns five numbers: the budget for the gifts, the exact amount per day, the rounded amount per day, the rounded plan's total, and the surplus over budget. Together they answer one question: what can each door cost?

The division does not care what sits behind the doors: chocolate, skincare minis or a daily energy drink. Store-bought or homemade, the method is identical.

Homemade calendars have no list price, so the honest figure is your supply run's cost.

How it works

The math is one division. Per the calculator's arithmetic definition, retrieved September 9, 2026: per day = gift budget ÷ days, once the box or wrapping is out of your total. Each day rounds up to the step you chose, so the plan can exceed the budget by a small surplus, shown separately.

The 24 comes from the calculator's day-count definition, retrieved September 9, 2026. Commercial calendars run December 1 through 24, though some US versions add a December 25 door, making 25. Liturgical Advent spans 22 to 28 days, starting the fourth Sunday before Christmas; our dates page explains.

Five steps:

1. Write down your total.
2. Subtract the box or wrapping.
3. Divide by 24.
4. Round each day up to your step.
5. Check the surplus before you commit.

Examples

$120 over 24 days, nearest $0.50. $120 ÷ 24 is $5.00 per day exactly, so the plan adds up to $120 with no surplus.

$100 over 24 days, nearest $0.50. The exact figure is $4.17 a day. Rounded up to $4.50, the plan totals $108, which is $8 over budget, shown as the surplus.

$60 over 24 days, exact. Unrounded, $60 ÷ 24 is $2.50 per day and the plan adds up to $60. That pot suits candy, stickers or a calendar of tiny builds.

Limits

The division assumes your budget covers gifts only and counts 24 days; add a December 25 door and the per-day figure drops. It cannot judge value: even slices say nothing about whether the doors are worth their share.
