About Nora

Nora spent six years as a buyer for a national beauty retailer, where the holiday assortment was planned in February and argued about until August. Advent calendars were the part of the calendar she looked forward to — the one product that has to be a story as well as a box.

She started writing about them publicly because the shopping advice available in October was, almost without exception, a list of links with no explanation of what a "value" claim on the front of a box is actually worth.

She writes from the buyer's side of the table: what goes into an assortment, why the last door is always the best one, and why the calendar you buy in September is a different purchase from the one you panic-buy on December 2.

How Nora works

  • Door math, stated plainly

Doors, contents and price belong in the same sentence. A number of doors means nothing until you know what size the thing behind each one is.

  • Category before brand

Chocolate, beauty, toy, drinks, refillable — pick the format that suits the person, then shop the brands inside it. That order saves more money than any coupon.

  • No tests, no invented numbers

We have not opened these calendars and we do not pretend to have. No scores, no invented prices, no ratings we cannot source from live retailer data.
